Madonna di Campiglio is one of the most famous ski resorts in Italy, and indeed the entire skiing world. One of the original ski resorts, it has stayed in the top five Italian resorts list for 80 years, holding a reputation for chic and glamorous atmosphere for the best part of a century.

Unlike some other original resorts, Madonna di Campiglio has managed to keep up with ski area fashions too. It is situated at quite a good altitude for snow and unusually high for a traditional ski village at 1550m.

This height had led it in to decline through the eighteenth and early nineteenth century before summer tourism began to take off in the late 1800s and then winter sports brought full life and a new status to the village in the 1930s.

The local ski slopes now extend for more than 150km (Nearly 100 miles) and reach over to connect with smaller ski resorts in the neighbouring Val di Sole. The available skiing is more than doubled again with the Brenta Dolomites regional pass available which includes neighbouring ski areas which combined offer nearly 400km (250 miles) of piste.

The area is one of great beauty, with much of the skiing in a picturesque valley surrounded by lovely woodland and located between two high glaciers. Madonna di Campiglio itself is very chic but not too intimidating for the less well-heeled. A huge investment a few years ago has led to the resort being largely pedestrianised and being much nicer as a result and there are excellent shopping, dining and other facilities.
  • Skiing for Beginners+

There are three ski schools operating in the resort, several with a long pedigree, for example the The "Nazionale" ski school which was founded in 1934 and has maintained high professional standards ever since.

Private lessons are popular as is the norm in resorts of this calibre, however group lessons are equally available. First timers meet at Campo Carlo Magno with lessons daily from 10am to 12.45. Classes can be videoed to enable analysis of performance afterwards.
  • Intermediate Skiing+

Ninety percent of Madonna di Campiglio’s terrain best suits intermediate skiers who will greatly enjoy whizzing around on the many blues and reds through the pretty woodland above the resort.

The high speed lift network makes getting around fast and easy, and downhill runs are up to 4km (2.5 miles) long.

The larger Super Skirama Dolomiti Adamello Brenta regional ski pass is also available if you need still more terrain to explore. It includes the nearby snowsure glacier ski area of Passo Tonale and the recently added 'White Highlands of Trentino' area.
  • Advanced+

Good skiers have several famous pistes to tackle including the Canalone Miramonti run down from Monte Spinale and the famous 3 Tre run - the site of the annual World Cup race. The black descent down to neighbouring Marilleva which pitches at more than 60 degrees on some sections is also good.

Off-piste guiding options are available from the ski school on request, and the ski school also operates a private slope for slalom or giant slalom race training every day. With the area pass you can head off to neighbouring resorts like Passo Tonale which has some good blacks down below the glacier.
  • Snowboarding at Madonna di Campiglio+

The main terrain park at Madonna di Campiglio is the brown bear themed Ursus Park. A top grade park it added four rails – rainbow, S-shaped, kinked and a C rail for the 2008-9 season as well as a new groomer to help with shaping all the snow features.

Madonna di Campiglio’s snow link to neighbouring resorts means that you can also easily reach the additional terrain park and half pipe at neighbouring Folgarida, a key venue in the Snowboard World Championships that took place in the neighbouring Val di Sole and maintains a popular.

The ease of access around the whole area thanks to fast modern chairs as well as the natural hits in the woods are all additional attractions for boarders.
  • Other Activities And Facilities at Madonna di Campiglio+

Shopping is very popular in Madonna di Campiglio, which has nearly 50 stores to visit. There are also beauty centres, gymnasia, games arcades, a cinema showing Italian films and a library.

Outdoors it is possible to take a scenic flight, try snow shoeing, cover hundreds of kilometres of cleared winter hiking paths should the urge take you or go paragliding or ice climbing.

Madonna has more than its fair share of unique social events, including polo matches on snow, vintage car rally on snow every January and the period-costume Habsburg Carnival each February.
  • Apres Ski And Dining Out+

Apres ski is as big, or bigger than the daytime on the slopes in Madonna di Campiglio where looking out for the great and the good is a full time business for some guests.

The early evening is usually quiet with the few dozen bars mostly refined and sophisticated. Things tend to get livelier towards midnight when the Des Alpes discotheque opens.

The Zangola night club, 3km (two miles) from the resort centre (it lays on transportation) is something of an institution.

As you would expect the dining choices include gourmet options such as the Relais Club des Alpes, as well as Le Roi and the Antico Focolare, but there are also more relaxed and economical establishments service abundant pasta or pizza.
  • Ski Holidays in Madonna di Campiglio suitable for Families+

There’s non-skiing childcare but ski school operates for three hours each morning and for children who already can ski, all day lessons through to 4pm are available, inclusive of lunchtime cover, although lunch is not provided.

The ski school meets at Campo Carlo Magno for beginners or at the bottom of the Pradalago cable car for more advanced skiers, but a ski school mini bus can also collect your children from your hotel and return them at the end of the lesson.

All children are provided with a ski school bib for easy recognition! There are race every Friday at 10.30am for beginner skiers and at 11am for more advanced skiers with prizes for everyone.
