Campitello is one of the smaller resorts of the half dozen or so that lie within the Fassa Valley. It is dominated by spectacular peaks of the Dolomite mountains which tower above it. The local Ladin culture remains strong and there's an annual winter carnival that lasts through part of the season.
You will also find strong regional influences to everything from architecture to cuisine if you look closely enough. Otherwise you can just enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and friendly hospitality of the locals.
For skiers the main attraction is a cable car which ascends more than 1000 vertical metres from its base at the edge of the village to the Col Rodella, the major mountain above the resort. From here half a dozen lifts, mostly modern quad chairs, serve largely intermediate grade terrain.
But still more interesting is the access from these ski slopes to a famous circuit of lifts that gives access to the Sella Ronda, one of the world's three largest lift-linked ski areas. This circuit links half a dozen resorts that are located like points on a compass around the giant Sella mountain.
It is about 24km (15 miles) round and can be tackled by intermediate level skiers. Along with the circuit itself, valleys such as Gardena and Badia radiate off, meaning that more than a dozen villages and over 500km (310 miles) of runs are linked in total.
These are all included in one hands-free lift ticket, the Dolomiti Superski Pass, which covers all lifts in the area and another 700km (430 miles) or so in nearby villages. At the end of the day you will usually need to get the cable car back down from Col Rodella as there's no ski run.
There is a nursery slope with drag lift by the village, but if snow cover isn't adequate (possibly at the start and end of the season), it's a case of taking the cable car up to Col Rodella where there are several more easy slopes on which to learn.
Intermediates have the most to benefit from a stay in Campitello. There are the local slopes at Col Rodella, 220km (140 miles) of piste in the Fassa Valley – a ski bus service linking them, the giant lift-linked Sella Ronda area, and even the larger Dolomiti Superski area to explore.
Whichever you choose, you can ski all the slopes on one lift ticket (if you have a season in which to get round them all), or you can purchase the Fassa Valley only pass. If you opt for the latter you have the small areas above Pozza and Vigo di Fassa on one side and of Canazei on the other (which is actually lift linked to Campitello's skiing above), and then more choices beyond in either direction.
The vast majority of terrain is graded easy to intermediate as the pink precipices of the Dolomites mean that most runs have to be on the gentler hill sides below
Advanced skiers have plenty of challenges in this vast area, but they are rather spread out, so it can be case of hitting a different area each day to taste the delights of each. For example, you could ski half way round the Sella Ronda to access the famous steeps of the Marmolada glacier, or head in to Val Gardena and the men's downhill course.
There are also some famous off-piste descents to tackle with a guide that run down some of the rare cracks in the façade of the Sella massif. The kilometre (two thirds of a mile) long Rodella run is the steepest locally with a 28 degree pitch. The Italian National Alpine Team have chosen to train in the Fassa Valley every year up to the 2010 Winter Olympics.
Snowboarders will enjoy the wide ranging opportunities and easy-to-ride modern uplift as much as skiers. There is a terrain park with half pipe and boardercross at Belvedere above Canazei, which can be reached over snow from the top of Campitello's cable car. Other parks can be accessed via the Sella Ronda or by the ski bus to other resorts in the Fassa Valley.
Close to the valley's cable-car station at Ischia, a modern and well-equipped sports centre has been developed in recent years. It has, amongst other things, a permanent climbing wall, a Rollerblade hockey court, a basketball court, mini football, tennis, golf driving range, even a landing area for those keen on paragliding and hang-gliding, who have made this area an international meeting point. There is a swimming pool at nearby Canazei.
Campitello has around a dozen bars and restaurants, most of them in the hotels. For a wider choice and livelier nightlife, head for neighbouring Canazei, but in either case you'll find largely informal, relaxed venues with great Italian food. In Campitello the Bar Ristorante Pizzeria Da Michele is one of the more popular all purpose eating and drinking establishments, or for a more intimate experience, try the accurately named Mini Restaurant.
Some hotels run private nursery facilities in Campitello, but there is no facility provided by the village, the nearest one is in neighbouring Canazei, a ski bus ride away. Here the Kinderland Skischool Canazei accepts children from age three. It is open from 8.30am – 5pm daily and children may stay from a half day to a full week with entertainment, lunch and ski school for all abilities. In Campitello itself children may join ski school from age four. Ski lessons normally last for about three hours each day, Sunday to Thursday mornings. Children 12 and older usually join adult classes.
