Finland's largest ski area is also one of its most attractive, with predominantly log chalet-style buildings providing the archetypal Lapland experience. It's the ideal place in which to enjoy a sauna in your room, then pop out at night to gaze in wonder at the northern lights.

Ski Holidays to
Yllas

The resort comprises two villages, Yllasjarvi and Alkaslompolo, located on either side of the Yllas fell and are a 15 minute free shuttle bus ride apart.

Although the largest ski area in Finland, the area is still small compared to most ski areas in the Alps and the runs, again the longest in the country, tend to be quite similar to one another on the smooth sided hillside, largely above the treeline.

So, in common with other Finnish resorts, there are lots of other activities to enjoy such as dog, reindeer and snowmobile safaris – usually full or half day activities - instead of skiing, rather than an après ski activity at the end of the day.

Also in common with other resorts in northern Finland it's important to be aware that temperatures can drop in to double digits below freezing, although they don't always. Multiple thin layers of thermal protection are important, especially at the body's extremities such as hats, gloves and socks.

Additional thermal outers are provided when you are out on safari and there are lots of warming huts to dive in to every hour or so on the slopes.

Beginners

Yllas has good beginner slopes conveniently located at the base of the mountain. More than half of the ski runs are then graded easy, so there's a huge choice of runs to progress on to once you've learned your basic technique.

The only real downside is that most of the lifts are non user-friendly T Bar drags, but you can get up the slopes on the gondola to avoid them.

The ski school is highly regarded, with English speaking instructors and affordable learn-to-ski packages with tuition, rentals and lift ticket included are available from us.

Intermediates

The runs of up to three kilometres (just under two miles) long are Finland's longest and there are more than 50 to choose from, albeit without a huge amount of variety between them.

Night skiing is available on several evenings each week so you can get on the slopes later in the day if you prefer.

Advanced

Although not really recommended for advanced skiers, there are six black runs, the toughest the 2.3km (1.5 mile) long World Cup run. There can also be good off piste powder to be found with the cold temperatures maintaining snow integrity for longer.

Snowboarding

Yllas is a major boarding centre with two terrain parks, one on either side of the fell, each containing a half pipe as well as numerous jumps. There is also a boarder cross course and some good free-riding terrain between the carving pistes.

Other Activities and Facilities

Alternative activities are equally important to downhill skiing and snowboarding for guests in Yllas. Cross country skiing is especially big, with more than 300km of trails, about a tenth of them floodlit for night skiing.

Snowmobiling is another major activity with a huge range of different excursions available, including two to five hour excursions during the day and night. Various dog sledding and reindeer safaris are also possible, as are ice fishing, Icelandic horse riding and snow shoeing.

Excursions are organised to visit Santa at various locations in the area, and trips to the Ice Hotel.

Après Ski and Dining Out

Yllas has a dozen bars and restaurants. There's no real resort centre, but venues are dotted around the two resort bases. When the lifts close, Julli's Bar and Kaivohuone are both good with live music and dancing in the evenings. The Akäs Hotel is the main venue and has a large dance floor, bar and night club.

Julli's Bar also does pizza, whilst the Yllaken Kaivohuone restaurant in Akaslompolo village serves more traditional Finnish meat and game dishes including ptarmigan and arctic char, and also vegetarian specialities.

Lappish nights with traditional music and buffet-style meals of local ingredients including dishes made of reindeer meat, salmon, mushrooms and loganberries are well worth attending.

Families

The Iso - Yllas Kindergarten accepts children aged from a year old in their facility at the base of the slopes, which is open daily from 10am to 5pm.

Ski school lessons begin at age five and there's both indoor facilities and a special outdoor area complete with a special children's lift. There's also a themed 'magic forest' terrain area.

Children aged under seven ski free and receive a free ski helmet to wear.
