Levi in the north of Finland operates the country's largest ski area. Although that's still not vast compared to the big regions in the Alps, the large number of lifts per piste kilometre - most of them drags - means that queues are rare.

However most guests only spend part of their winter sports holidays on the slopes here anyway, as other part and full day activities such as reindeer safaris, dog sledding and snowmobiling are all very popular.

Levi is quite a large ski resort with first class hotels, restaurants and shops. The resort's northerly latitude, within the Arctic Circle, means the snow cover is more-or-less guaranteed from October to May; there's an extensive snowmaking system in place in case Mother Nature fails to deliver to order.

The Arctic Circle location of course means it can sometimes be very cold in winter, so good thermal cover for every bit of your body is important here, and there are plenty of snug cafés to head to if you get too cold. You also have a very good chance of seeing the Northern Lights.

Lift opening hours can extend with the rapid increase of daylight hours through the winter and in to spring, but generally all lifts open at 10am, with the majority open until 5pm. Lifts 2 and 3, the Levi North and Levi Express lifts are open until 8pm however, with lifts 6, 7, 8, 13 and 14 open until between 6 and 7pm. Many of the ski runs are floodlit, useful after the short daylight hours of midwinter.
  • Beginners+

Quite a good choice for beginners who wish to be immediately immersed in the extremes of winter in a beautiful northern environment. There are plenty of wide and easy slopes, particularly those served by lifts 7 and 12. Then there are slightly longer and steeper runs to move on to by the end of the week.

All inclusive deals from us including lift pass, tuition and rentals will offer the best value and cost a third less than the equivalent package in the Alps.
  • Intermediates+

More than half of Levi's pistes are graded intermediate, and skiers will enjoy whizzing around on the wide, open ski runs. The Koillisrinteet sector of the north-eastern pistes are some of the longest and fastest on the mountain, whilst Lammaskuru is a good area to head to for sunshine in the afternoon.
  • Advanced+

The black graded World Cup piste has a 52% final stretch, one of the steepest in Scandinavia, and there is also a challenging mogul field underneath the gondola and next to lift number seven.

Off piste is also often possible, as the low temperatures tend to maintain the powder for much longer than is the case with the thaw-and-melt cycle that affects fresh snow at lower altitudes in the Alps. It's best to tackle this with a local guide however, as once you venture off piste here there's little but wilderness all around.
  • Snowboarding+

The Eturinteet sector (Front pistes) in the heart of Levi Center contains the resort's super pipe, halfpipe and boxes. The gondola area in the Etelärinteet sector (the south pistes) is floodlit and also has a snow park and banked slalom track. Throughout the resort there are excellent carving pistes with powder in between but, other than the gondola, most lifts are T bars.
  • Other Activities And Facilities+

Cross-country skiing is of course as popular as downhill in Levi, as it is in ski resorts across Scandinavia. Thanks to its northerly latitude the first-snow track (nine kilometres long) is usually open by end of October.

From December the full length of the 230km long network of varied ski tracks, all well-maintained and all with plenty of places to stop off en route in the warmth of a campfire, will be open. All tracks of Levi are suitable for both classic and free techniques.

There are many other outdoor activities available including horse riding, ice fishing, trips to 'Santa's Secret Home' and excursions to the famous Ice hotel over the nearby border in Sweden. Varying lengths and itineraries are available for dog sled, snowmobile and reindeer safaris.

The Levintunturi Hotel, the main accommodation in resort, has a large indoor pool as well as fitness and spa facilities and an indoor golf simulator.
  • Apres Ski And Dining Out+

There are about 30 bars and restaurants to choose from in and around Levi. These offer everything from sophisticated lounge bars to lively karaoke joints and from burger bars and pizzerias through to gourmet establishments serving local specialities. Not to be missed is a traditional Lappish Night which involves a copious buffet using local ingredients such as salmon, reindeer, mushrooms and bilberries.
  • Families+

Kid´s land in the Eturinteet sector contains a playing area for children aged 0 - 6 years on the left side of the Front pistes. There are free children´s lifts, a hill for sledging, lappish teepee, ski carousel and the children´s day-care facility "Tenavatokka". Lunchtime cover is not usually included.
