Tremblant could be described as the most successful small ski resort in the world – if you measure success in terms of popularity. Tremblant just keeps growing in popularity and is aiming to attract four million visitors early in the next decade following further expansion with the new Versant Soleil base village.

What hasn’t changed very much, in terms of the size of developed terrain at least, is the ski hill in the centre of it all. But the resort below has changed beyond all recognition from 1939, when the first ski lift was installed. It is an Intrawest resort, built by the same company that gave us Whistler. So expect an attractive pedestrianised village, laid out to an expert design for maximum convenience and enjoyment, in a faux re-creation of traditional regional architecture. However, it remains surrounded by 1500 square kilometres of national park land.

The success of this model has been such that the resort has grown and grown and a second resort base complete with casino is under construction. Consistently voted the most popular Eastern North American resort by US ski magazine polls for over a decade now, the village has so much to do that increasing numbers of non-skiers are arriving to enjoy it in the same way that established resorts like Aspen and St Moritz now attract at least as many non-skiers as skiers. Tremblant is also easy to get to by a wide, largely illuminated modern road from Montreal airport, most of it dual carriageway.

Beginners

There are good nursery ski areas right next to the resort base, and with everything conveniently located from lodging, to rentals, tickets and ski schools, as well as the essential cafes to collapse in after struggling through your first hours on the slopes, Tremblant is a very user friendly location for first timers. Packages inclusive of tuition, rentals and lift tickets are available, and offer a considerable saving to buying these three elements separately.

Intermediates

Intermediates will find a diverse range of trails over four sides of the mountain ranging from the easy, six-kilometre (four mile) Nansen trail to challenging moguls-filled on the Géant run, through the exciting glades of The Edge. To learn where the best ski conditions are, according to the time of the day, and discover lesser known trails or even to admire the best scenic views in the region, guided tours are organized twice daily by skiers who are privy to the mountain's best kept secrets. A huge snowmaking system ‘Avalanche’ with more than 1,000 snow guns, enables the resort to create huge quantities of snow as soon as it’s cold enough.

Advanced

Despite its rather small size compared to most of the well known North American ski areas (less than 1000 acres compared to 3-8,000 at big resorts on the west coast), Tremblant does have the most high speed lifts on the east coast and half of its terrain is optimistically graded advanced. The Edge sector is one of the most interesting sectors. It keeps evolving, with trails widened in to glades accessible from the Edge chair bringing more excitement for tree skiers. Sensation and Haute-Tension’s paths offer good powder stashes after fresh snowstorms.

Snowboarding

There are three different snow parks designed for every ability level. With 40 acres of groomed terrain, 10,000 watts of sound, 40 different modules and a huge Super Pipe, the parks at Tremblant should keep your adrenaline pumping throughout your stay. The Progression Park on the South Side has smaller jumps and jibs designed for learning the basics before moving on to more serious stuff. The intermediate zone on the North side is more testing with a set-up of big air jumps, rails and boxes. South Park is the advanced zone for the best practitioners of airborne technique. Located on the Promenade, on the South side, it is a combination of challenging modules, awesome rails, huge jumps and hips. Available only to Adrenaline Park Pass holders, it tests the skills of the best riders and offers a great spectacle to skiers and snowboarders riding the Flying Mile lift overhead. There is also a giant superpipe on the North side. The parks are designed in collaboration with local riders and maintained by a dedicated team of professional groomers.

Other Activities and Facilities

Tremblant keeps adding more and more attractions. You can choose from eight different snowmobiling tours which range from easy to exciting challenges for advanced snowmobiliers. You can also opt to have a private guide tailor a trip just for you. Dog sledding trips allow you to ride your own sleigh through the mountain, the forest, or along the shore of the Rouge River. One hour sleigh rides are also offered with hot chocolate and storytelling included. There are 65km of cross country ski trails; you can try ice climbing, tubing, horseback riding or snowshoeing. Scenic tours of the region are available by light plane or helicopter (Tremblant has a small airport 30 minutes from the resort). If you prefer to be in the air under your own steam then Aerobranche could be the answer. This involves tackling an obstacle course suspended in the tree tops whilst you move along held up by a safety harness. This activity is also available at night with a headlamp on your helmet.

Indoor activities include the Cinema Pine on Rue des Remparts two-screen, and Le Studio Créatif: where you can try your hand at Ceramic painting. The Aquaclub La Source is a major attraction combining spa and water sports leisure centre. The facility includes fitness centre, pools, whirlpools, a Tarzan rope on which to swing out over the pool and a steam bath.

Shopping is also big in Tremblant, which in some ways resembles a designer mall. There are 45 retailers to choose from in the pedestrian village. Boutiques range from sports stores to ready-to-wear by way of a perfume shop, pastry shop, and many more.

Après Ski and Dining Out

Tremblant's pedestrian village comes to life in the evenings with ambient lighting and often live music performances in the central Place Saint-Bernard square at the base of the slopes. Lively après ski gives way to dining in one of the convenient restaurants where you can enjoy the culinary specialties of Old Tremblant. You have a choice ranging from splendid French cuisine to a succulent Savoie-style fondue or homemade crepes. There are several night spots open in to the small hours where you can listen to music chosen by a DJ, or choose yourself to perform for everyone else in a Karaoke bar.

Families

Tremblant’s pedestrian nature, high quality and spacious accommodation, designed-in convenience and affordable dining all make it very good for families. Facilities like tubing and the excellent La Source Aquaclub swimming pool also give it the edge over most other ski resorts. The Kids Club, located at the base of the slopes, accepts non-skiers ages one to six. It has indoor and outdoor playgrounds, morning and afternoon snacks, activities and games. Ski kindergarten is available for children aged three and up with ski school lessons for older children designed according to age.
