Waidring Transfer Times+
| Salzburg: | 50 minutes |
| Munich / München: | 3 hours |
Waidring is a mid-sized village close to Kitzbuhel. A traditional Tyrolean resort, it has a very picturesque centre with aged chalet-style buildings huddled around the village's onion-domed church. The area is located just where the Austrian provinces of Tyrol and Salzburg meet Germany's Bavaria.
The resort has its own ski area, the Steinplatte, which offers a selection of easy and intermediate runs on wide open powder slopes above the treeline, served by a network of predominantly high capacity chairlifts. These include eight seater chairs as well as a gondola, far more than you would expect for a ski area of this size and testimony to its popularity.
The Steinplatte is not high or large - with about 35km (22 miles) of runs, the highest at 1860m. It is accessed by road up from Waidring, which also has a small selection of runs down at village level, served by a few drag lifts.
More demanding skiers will want to purchase the Kitzbüheler Alpen regional pass which includes over 700km (437 miles) of piste in the area, including the giant Ki-West region of Kitzbuhel and the SkiWelt, linked at Westendorf.
The SkiWelt, with 250km (157 miles) of piste, is the largest single ski area in Austria. The regional pass also incorporates the Schneewinkel areas around St Johann in Tyrol and Fieberbrunn.

Skiing for Beginners+
Waidring has an excellent beginners' area right next to the village at the Hausberglift. Here there are two lifts serving 1.5 km (a mile) of easy and low-intermediate groomed pistes that are ideal for beginners and early intermediates.
The only problem may be at either end of the season, as the low altitude of the ski slope here may be problematic in warmer weather.
However it's easy to get up to the higher runs on Steinplatte, in the unlikely event that this is the case, and learn there instead. Your ski school will decide which is the best choice.
-
Intermediate Skiing+
The local Steinplatte slopes will keep most intermediate level skiers happy. There are 32km (20 miles) of runs which have almost complete snow making cover. The Schneewinkel pass covers half a dozen neighbouring resorts (linked by a bus service) and costs less than the full Kitzbuhel Alpen ticket, whilst providing all the runs you're likely to need.
You can head to St. Johann for example, where there's a good choice of 4 - 5km (3 mile) reds and blues back down to the village from the top of the ski lifts at Harschbichl, and the long Lacknerabfahrt run down from Jodlalm is especially highly thought of.
-
Advanced+
Advanced skiers do not have a huge choice at Waidring itself with a single black, albeit 1.2km (three-quarters of a mile) long to enjoy. With the Schneewinkel Pass there are other on-piste challenges, Fieberbrunn being probably the best known.
Experts can head further off piste with a guide in to the trees; there's also a slalom stadium for racers and several groomed black pistes.
The Kitzbuhel Alpen ticket brings yet more challenges, including of course famous Kitzbuhel itself and the Hahnenkamn World Cup runs.

Snowboarding at Waidring+
Waidring has a terrain park on the Steinplatte, that usually comes complete with half pipe, and is great for most boarders. However, for the most demanding, once again it is the choice in the wider area that is likely to appeal more, particularly the major snowboarding centre of Fieberbrunn, included on the regional Schneewinkel Pass.
A pioneer of boarding from the early days of the sport, home to one of snowboarding's most legendary terrain parks and a long time major venue on the international competition circuit.

Other Activities And Facilities at Waidring+
There is a lot to do in the area when you're not skiing or snowboarding. There are 275 kilometres of trails for classic and skate style cross country skiing for everyone from novices to experts.
Sleigh rides, snowshoe tours, tandem paragliding jumps, snow mobiling excursions and quad biking on an ice circuit as well as hot air balloon rides are all available in the vicinity.
The Panorama Leisure Center located in nearby St. Johann is the major indoor leisure venue in the area. It has an artificial ice skating rink as well as a 25m indoor pool, a 62m Sport pool and a hot outdoor pool. The facility also has a new sauna and excellent wellness facilities.
There's a range of shops in the village too and excursions to Kitzbuhel and Salzburg are available.
-
Apres Ski And Dining Out+
Waidring has 15 bars and restaurants, most of them in hotels in the village. Nightlife is typically low key, especially compared to nearby Kitzbuhel and St. Johann, which are easy evening outings if you wish, perhaps to the former's casino.
However Waidring does have several lively bars if you do want to party once the lift close. Your best bet is Zardini's, which is normally buzzing with the crowds from the Steinplatte. The Hausberg - Schirmbar is another good venue.
Restaurants are typically Austrian with a couple of pizzeria, and mostly located in the resort's larger hotels.

Ski Holidays in Waidring suitable for Families+
Waidring is a lovely venue for a relaxed family ski holiday in fairytale surroundings. On the slopes Bobo´s Childrens Club, operated by the local ski school, provides fun for children aged four to eight, between 10am and 3pm daily, with lunch cover if required. The school offers a mixture of fun play and education in order to successfully teach children to ski.
The highlight of the week is the race on Thursday, where all participants get a medal for their performance. If your child has any doubts about whether they prefer to ski or board, there's a practice day available on Sunday and Monday to try both.
