    Innsbruck:60 minutes
    Munich / München:2 hours
Niederau is one of four traditional ski villages in the Tyrol's Wildschonau Valley. The area is located in the Kitzbuhel Alps and is a closed valley with no through traffic, and there has been skiing here for more than 60 years.

Niederau is the closest of the four to the valley entrance and to the Inn Valley motorway, only six kilometres (four miles) away, which makes transfers from Innsbruck (45 minutes away), Salzburg and Munich (90 minutes away each) fast and easy.

Although primarily promoted internationally as a beginner ski area, the local Markbachjoch ski area offers runs for all ability levels including some of the steepest runs in the region. Indeed there's no easy graded run from the top to the bottom of the mountain, although plenty of beginner trails at the base and the summit of the mountain, with a gondola linking the two.

A free ski bus links the resort to the smaller ski areas at Oberau and Thierbach as well as the highest ski slopes on the circuit at Auffach.

The resort and the ski slopes are some of the lowest in the Alps, but north facing pistes and extensive snow making should ensure snow cover is good throughout much of the season. The resort has also won awards for the quality of its piste maintenance.

The area also participates in the giant Kitzbuhel Alps pass which covers 680km (425 miles) of piste in the region including the lift-linked Kitzbuhel and Skiwelt areas, one of the world's five biggest ski regions.
  • Skiing for Beginners+

There are gentle nursery slopes at the base of the Markbachjoch with the ski school offering six days of lessons with four hours per day for a beginner's course. A gondola accesses more easy slopes at the top of the mountain.

We can also offer combined lesson, lift ticket and equipment rental deals at low prices compared to buying these items in resort.
  • Intermediate Skiing+

Intermediates will find long reds back down beneath the gondola and the option of hopping on the ski bus over to Auffach which has a bigger choice of red runs, including about a dozen above the treeline on open powder slopes.

The two stage gondola accesses the full 1,000m vertical and opens up trails down through the forest of up to seven kilometres (four miles) long.

    Night skiing is also available.
  • Advanced+

Niederau has most of the tough skiing in the Wildschonau Valley with some excellent long blacks over verticals of up to 800m.

The Markbachjoch and Gipfel blacks are both highly regarded and the Austrian National Ski team, train in the local race stadium. There is an FIS race course between the Mittermoosjoch and the race stadium.

Other steep runs in the area include The Lanerkopfl via the Hochbergh run for downhill and Super G. Section 2 of the Schatzberg above Auffach is ideal for giant slalom and the Riedlberg in neighbouring Oberau is good for slalom.

Off piste, mogul fields and tree skiing is also popular as is high mountain ski touring.
  • Snowboarding at Niederau+

Terrain park features are spread across the region. Auffach has area's terrain park on the Schatzberg, served by the Thalerkogel lift, complete with pro jump, quarter pipe, snake, wave, kickers, rails and a 90 metre half pipe. The park has won the highest awards from reviewers.

At Niederau there's a boarder arena and boarder cross course.
  • Other Activities And Facilities at Niederau+

Most non-ski activities in the area are outdoor and include sleigh rides, 30km of cross country skiing, snowshoeing, ice skating and a four kilometre (two mile) toboggan run at Auffach. There's a shorter toboggan slope, floodlit for night-time use at Niederau.

Romantic walks are organised to the breathtaking Kundl gorge and excursions to Innsbruck or Salzburg are available.

The indoor pool and sauna at the Hotel Austria is open to the public daily until 3pm. There's a larger pool complex at Worgl, six kilometres (four miles) away, which also has indoor tennis courts. The Hotel Sportklause has a bowling alley.
  • Apres Ski And Dining Out+

There are 30 bars and restaurants spread across the Wildschonau area. These include some lively bars in Niederau such as Dorfstuben and the Cove Bar.

Most of the restaurants are traditional Tyrolean located in the valley's hotels. Along with the many serving fondues and raclettes, there are several pizzerias.

Local dishes from the region include delicious Wildschonau doughnuts.
  • Ski Holidays in Niederau suitable for Families+

The ski school has nursery care for children from two and a half years old. This Mini Club has its own fenced in terrain park and a roundabout ski lift, as well as a friendly penguin mascot called Bobo.
