One of the 20 most popular destinations for British skiers for more than 30 years, Mayrhofen has multiple attractions which boil down to spectacular scenery, a great resort, and excellent skiing that bring people back again and again.

Despite substantial expansion to become one of the largest ski villages in Austria, Mayrhofen has maintained its integrity as an authentic Tyrolean resort with attractive chalet style buildings set against the stunning backdrop of the Ziller Valley, a short transfer from Innsbruck. Its natural beauty makes it as popular in summer as winter.

Mayrhofen’s expansion in the resort and on the mountain over the years has left it one of the world’s leading resorts and ski areas. In the village there are world class facilities including an excellent adventure swimming pool complex. The same is true on the ski slopes with the latest hi-tec lifts and trails continuing towards neighbouring Tux with its year-round snow sure ski slope reaching 3000m.

Beginners

Mayrhofen has several separate ski hills and one of these, Ahorn, is almost exclusively suited to beginners with easy slopes around the top. There are more easy trails at the top of the larger Penken area. The advantages of these summit ski areas is that they remain snowsure when the snow melts down at village level and both can be reached without any ski experience by the gondola and cable car lifts that take you up from the village.

Intermediates

Mayrhofen has nearly 100 miles (160km) of runs which appeal mostly to intermediate skiers. The Zillertal 3000 pass covers the terrain above Finkenberg and on the Eggalm and Rastkogel with several different marked routes to explore to move around the area. These include the ‘Zillertal 3000’ circuit which encompasses largely red runs and the ‘Altitude Swallowers’ circuit which covers 13,000 metres of vertical as you go round. The main ski area is the Penken, where there are long red and blue runs. The popular Devil's Run is on the linked Horberg mountain. For still more choice the Zillertaler Super Skipass opens up over 700km (450 miles) of trails served by more than 150 lifts at ski areas right along the Ziller Valley. The bus between resorts is free to Pass holders.

Advanced

Mayrhofen has a cool snow sports image which has attracted the snowboarding crowd but has not managed to persuade expert skiers that it is a great destination for them. That’s not to say there’s not plenty for advanced skiers to enjoy if they make an effort, and Mayrhofen have tried themselves by opening Austria’s steepest piste, Harakiri, with gradients of up to 78%, although opinions vary as to whether steep is the same as tough for good skiers. For off-piste there are some great routes through the trees of the Ahorn, accessed by a large cable car. The five kilometre (three mile) long Ebenwald slalom trail is also worth a look.

Snowboarding

Mayrhofen has successfully built a reputation as one of Europe’s leading boarding destinations, helped in part by the great party atmosphere in the resort, but perhaps more by the superb Penken terrain park, widely regarded as one of Europe’s best. There are multiple lines, big air, jumps, table tops, rails, quarter pipe, fun box, a boarder cross and half pipe. Such is their dedication that the lift company employs a full time professional park maintenance crew to keep the park in tip top shape all season.

Other Activities and Facilities

Being a large year-round resort, there’s plenty to do off the slopes in and around Mayrhofen. Facilities include a large adventure pool complex and sports centre as well as an ice rink, bowling, indoor tennis and squash courts. Activities include snowmobiling, tubing, sleigh rides, paragliding, horse riding and you can even travel to the nearby Olympic bobsleigh run at Igls and ride down in a bobsleigh behind a professional driver. Remember to tuck your head in. Mayrhofen is also on a steam train line so train rides are possible.

Après Ski and Dining Out

Mayrhofen has a reputation for its lively nightlife with a good selection of bars such as the famous Scotland Yard and two night clubs, one of them featuring a two storey disco. There are always plenty of live acts performing in all genres and the village has a reputation as the music capital of the Tyrol. There are more than 70 restaurants in the village where the chefs produce traditional Austria Tyrolean cuisine including the local Zillertaler Krapfen (savoury pancakes) or beef Carpaccio incorporating asparagus mousse and chevril whip.

Families

A lovely resort to spend quality family time in, the facilities for families are well above average in Mayrhofen. There’s an adventure swimming pool with two giant slides, ice skating, tobogganing and even children’s parascending for the brave (parents).

Wuppy’s Kinderland is a nursery facility for children from aged three months to seven years in the village. Children can visit for half or full days and buggies, cots and even baby carriers can be rented here if needed.

For children aged four and up there’s a choice of ski schools offering special children’s classes.
