A pretty, traditional Tyrolean village Kirchdorf offers the ideal backdrop for a picture-perfect winter sports holiday. Traditional chalets cluster around the village church and the local hotels provide cosy, wood-lined restaurants in which to while away the evenings.

At 640m Kirchdorf is also one of the lowest ski resorts in the brochures with Haberberg, the small local ski hill above the resort, only extending the snow range up to 900m. This is great for beginners but less enticing to more advanced skiers.

Lucky then that the resort sits at the heart of the larger Schneewinkel ski area with 170km (more than 105 miles) of piste. A short ski bus ride takes you to the larger ski areas above Fieberbrunn, Waidring and St Johann in Tyrol.

Although these remain quite low ski areas, the most modern snowmaking system in Austria went into service there for the 2006/7 season. If required, a total of 45 km of piste can be covered in snow along its whole length using a fully automatic system in only 60 hours.

If that area is still not enough, you can opt for the full Kitzbühel Alps Ski Pass which gives access to 704 kilometers (440 miles) of slopes, serviced by nearly 250 ski lifts in the area, extending to cover the skiing around Kitzbuhel and on the Skiwelt, Austria's largest single lift linked ski area.

Beginners

A good choice for beginners, particularly for holidays in the New Year rather than pre-Christmas, as the likelihood of good snow cover down to the resort's village-side nursery slopes is much higher by then. If there is any snow cover problem, it's a short trip to the nursery slopes of higher ski areas like St. Johann and Waidring, which you should be quickly progressing on to anyway.

Intermediates

Intermediates have the advantage of a huge ski area surrounding them, but the minor frustration of needing to get a bus to and back from it every day, as it is accessed through neighbouring resorts.

The three main areas nearby are at St. Johann, Fieberbrunn and Waidring and each offers a great choice of blues and reds to keep you entertained for a day or two. You may be tempted by a trip over to Kitzbuhel or the Skiwelt too if you buy the bigger area pass.

Night skiing is offered via Rueppenhang at St. Johann in Tirol on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 7pm to 9:30pm. A small additional fee is payable.

Advanced

Probably not a natural choice for advanced skiers, however mixed ability parties could divide up on the bus each day, with beginners staying locally and more advanced skiers heading further afield.

The on-piste attractions are rather limited even at neighbouring areas for the most demanding skiers– Fieberbrunn probably has the strongest reputation with some steeps and good off-piste powder to tackle with a guide if the snowfall coincides with your visit.

The wider Kitzbuhel Alpen pass gives access to more challenges including the famous Streif downhill piste at Kitzbuhel, venue for the annual Hahnenkamm race, Austria's most popular annual sports event.

Snowboarding

Kirchdorf offers both unintimidating terrain for beginners and a location between some of Europe's leading snowboarding areas. Fieberbrunn, for example, is one of Europe's top destinations for snowboarders, and has built its reputation thanks to the “Lords of the Boards" operation, which includes a dedicated boarding school, terrain park, half pipe and competition Programme.

The large terrain park has something for all ability levels, as well as a chill out zone and bar. The resort has been staging major international boarding events for more than a decade, with the Snowboard Masters World Cup including slalom and pipe events in 1997 and the first ISF European Snowboard Championships ("Lords of the Boards") a year later.

St. Johann in Tyrol is another major boarding centre with pipes, tables, boxes, slides, rails, jumps and kickers. Overall park length is 500 meters.

Other Activities and Facilities

Kirchberg is very well equipped with excellent leisure facilities. These include two swimming pools and wellness facilities at Kaiserquell and in the Hotel Seiwalda. There is a modern indoor sports centre in the area with an adventure pool incorporating slides and outdoor heated pool. There are also indoor tennis courts and fitness facilities.

Outdoor activities include curling, ice skating, sleigh rides and paragliding. A toboggan run descends two kilometres (a mile-and-a-quarter) from Bacheralm and is floodlit to midnight every day. Excursions to Salzburg, Innsbruck and Kitzbuhel are all available.

Après Ski and Dining Out

Après ski is usually rather quiet with about a dozen bars and restaurants, almost all in the resort's large hotels. Popular venues include Castello and the Dorf Café.

Most of the dining is also done in hotels where you can enjoy Austrian and Tyrolean regional specialities. The resort organises a lot of weekly activities such as curling or toboggan nights, adding to the community spirit!

Families

A lovely resort for a quality family ski holiday. Kirchdorf is well equipped for even the youngest children, with those aged six months and older looked after by the local Skischule Total Wilder Kaiser. The school also runs the Magic Snowland ski kindergarten for children aged four and over, which has a separate fun park for children to learn in a safe environment.

This is equipped with a carpet conveyor lift for easy ascent of the gentle slope. Ski pass prices are also amongst the most generous in Austria for children, and in addition we can may offer ski school, rentals and tuition package deals for beginners and advancing intermediates at a low cost.
