A large and attractive Tyrolean village centred around its large church, Kirchberg maintains an identity of its own, whilst being located only six kilometres (under four miles) from its famous neighbour Kitzbuhel, with which it shares a ski area.

Indeed Kirchberg has built something of a reputation as the back door route on to the Pengelstein and Hahnenkamm areas above Kitzbuhel, avoiding the queues! The resorts and ski areas are quite low by modern standards, but there are extensive snow making facilities.

There's a choice of lift tickets depending on how large a ski area you need. Kirchberg sits a few kilometres from the connection point between two of Austria's largest ski areas, the SkiWelt and Kitzbuhel's own ski area.

These were more-or-less lift linked a few years ago by the new Ki-west gondola which arrives a little way outside Kirchberg on the road to Aschau. Together the areas provide more than 400km (250 miles) of piste.

If that's still not enough, the Kitzbuhel Alpen Pass extends the boundaries further by taking in more than 700km (435 miles) of piste including those of neighbouring (but not lift-linked) resorts like St. Johann in Tyrol and Fieberbrunn.

• Skiing for Beginners+

  There is a small beginners' area with rope tow by the village, with the option of nursery slopes on the mountain if snow cover in resort is thin at the ends of the season. A unique attraction for Austria is that the nursery lift and other practice lifts in the valley operate free of charge.
  
  We can usually offer a combination package price for ski tuition (four hours each day for five days), equipment rental and lift ticket, at a saving on the cost of buying these separately.

• Intermediate Skiing+

  An exceptional ski area for intermediates, Kirchberg is uniquely placed at the heart of Austria's biggest lift linked ski area, and next door to some of the world's best known skiing, at Kitzbuhel.
  
  Not to be missed is the area's unique Ski Safari route which covers 35km of piste, 15km on lifts and 6000 vertical metres as you travel across the Kitzbuhel ski area following the recommended route.
  
  The full linkage over to Jochberg and Pass Thurn only became possible in 2005 with the opening of the spectacular eight-passenger 3S gondola, which makes the valley crossing on one of the longest and highest links in the world.
  
  And that's just one day. On another you might take the Ki-west gondola over to Westendorf and the 250km (158 miles) of the Skiwelt. And on another day you could take a bus to the Schneewinkel area around St. Johann and on yet another you could even ski Kirchberg's own small ski hill, Gaisberg, which has its own red and black descents.

  With the world famous Hahnenkamm world cup run just over the back of the mountain from Kirchberg, and Kitzbuhel's notoriety for skiers worldwide, it's no surprise that Kirchberg draws some of the world's best skiers. • Snowboarding at Kirchberg+

  The Kitzbühel Horn area is home to the resort's terrain park which normally features two half pipes, a quarter pipe, a large table jump and a sprint slalom course. Boarders can also enjoy the ski safari route, and the large number of high speed chairs and gondolas makes getting around the big ski area both quick and easy.

• Other Activities And Facilities at Kirchberg+

  Kirchberg has 40km (25 miles) of cleared winter hiking paths, or you can head out on snowshoes or cross country skis, which have 80km of tracks prepared for them, opening on to 220km of tracks in the wider region. Better still, get driven along on a horse-drawn sleigh ride.
  
  There's a floodlit three-and-a-half kilometre (just over two mile) long toboggan run served by the Gaisberg chairlift. You will also find ice rinks for skating and curling.
  
  Indoors there's tennis, squash, bowling and billiards with swimming pools and fitness centres in many hotels. In neighbouring Kitzbuhel there's extensive shopping, an excellent adventure swimming pool and a casino. Excursions to Salzburg and Innsbruck are also available.

• Apres Ski And Dining Out+

  Kirchberg can be quite lively in the evening with the local variant of the Londoner Pub (there's another one in Kitzbühel) popular with German visitors, although all are of course welcome. Evening toboggan runs on the floodlit course and 'Tyrolean themed' evenings with accordion music are also available.
  
  There are about 20 restaurants, virtually all in the large hotels. Along with the many serving Austrian and Tyrolean specialities there are Italian and Chinese options. Many visitors pop over to Kitzbühel for at least one night during their stay, to visit the swimming pool complex (fifty per cent off admission with your lift pass) or the casino.

• Ski Holidays in Kirchberg suitable for Families+

  Kirchberg has some of the best facilities for families in the area with a rare non-ski nursery facility accepting children aged one and over, an unusually young age to be accepted at nursery facilities in Austria.
  
  It takes children aged up to six, and the Kinderclub Total recommends booking at least a day in advance. All day care is available including lunch if required. On the snow the Skischule Kirchberg accepts children aged four and older for special ski kindergarten classes and fun.
