Katschberg is a small but perfectly formed resort situated on the border of Carinthia and Salzburgerland provinces, about 1½ hours south east of Salzburg. At 1640 metres, Katschberg not only offers a great snow record but stunning views of pine-clad mountains stretching as far as the eye can see. The 60km of pistes are particularly suited to beginners and intermediates. Moreover, it’s making things easy and enjoyable for families where Katschberg comes into its own. Its popularity with families lies in its easy access to a charming, uncrowded ski area, dedicated nursery slopes and children’s ski areas and a good choice of family-focused non-ski activities. The resort retains a traditional atmosphere centred around a small village centre, just 250m from the newly built Hotel Cristallo. A ski bus links the resort to the nearby villages of Rennweg and St Michael.

Beginners
Katschberg is an ideal resort for beginners. Directly opposite the Hotel Cristallo there are two nursery areas so no need for buses or long walks. Here, beginners gain confidence quickly under the close supervision of the English-speaking ski school based within the hotel. By Thursday, even complete beginners will want to join in the end-of-week race day.

Intermediate
Intermediates will love the uncrowded, wide runs to practice and improve their techniques. The Tschaneck side of the ski area, just in front of The Cristallo, has some wide, undulating red runs as well as plenty of tree-lined runs towards St Peter. On the Aineck side, there are various routes down to St Margarethen, with several cosy mountain restaurants for a welcoming pit stop on the way.

Advanced
There are a few black runs but the resort would never claim to offer advanced skiers and boarders huge mileage or really challenging pistes. However, when the conditions are right, there is easy-to-reach, often untracked, off-piste through the trees.

Snowboarding
Beginner boarders will appreciate the gentle nursery areas, while improvers will enjoy perfecting their techniques on plenty of wide runs, many of which are served by express chairlifts. There is a terrain park just above St Margarethen.

Children
This is a fantastic resort for children for skiing and non-skiing children. There are two children’s ski areas just outside the Hotel Cristallo which are gentle with easy lifts and one area with a warming hut and small obstacles to ski through. Here specially trained ski school instructors encourage children to have fun as well as learn the basics. The Hotel Cristallo has a hotel-run crèche for children aged 3 years and babysitting for younger children is available on request. Après ski activities have a family focus and children will love all the family-friendly facilities within the hotel.

Apres Ski
Katschberg is a small, friendly resort with a traditional atmosphere. The small village centre has a few shops, restaurants and bars, some which offer live music although evenings are generally fairly quiet here. Off the slopes, there are plenty of activities to choose from.
