Katschberg is an ideal choice for those looking for the smallest of ski resorts in an unspoilt location. Part of the Lungau region on the border of the provinces of Carinthia and Salzburgerland, Katschberg is a tiny hamlet -with just a handful of hotels, shops and restaurants; but with a moderately sized ski area on your doorstep.

The resort is very high by the standards of most Austrian resorts, making it snowsure, and the reason that it has a good-sized ski area is that it shares this with the larger villages of St. Michael im Lungau and St. Margarethen im Lungau down in the valley below, and linked by ski bus. Or you can ski over to the latter resort.

Katschberg's skiing is separated in to two areas, accessed by chairlifts from opposite ends of the resort. Once you're out on the slopes though, you can ski between the two as the local Tschaneck sector is connected to the neighbouring Aineck mountain about St Margarethen via a ski bridge with conveyor ski lift.

The ski area has a good collection of high speed, high capacity lifts including a number of four and six seater chairlifts, providing queue-free, high-speed uplift. A hundred percent of the pistes have snow making cover.

• Skiing for Beginners+

  A great place for beginners with several dedicated nursery slopes right next to the resort, meaning that learning to ski here is both well organised and convenient. The village's high altitude and extensive snowmaking means that these slopes are available all winter long.
  
  Katschberg has a wide range of longer blues so that you can move on to longer runs as soon as you feel confident to do so.

• Intermediate Skiing+

  Katschberg has built a reputation for its wide sunny slopes, with high speed comfortable, queue-free uplift. The recently created A1 piste on the Aineck side is a particular attraction. Six kilometres (four miles) long, the piste runs straight from the mountain top down to the Salzburg side, with a constant gradient.
  
  Night skiing is available between 7 and 9pm on the Königswiese slopes on several evenings each week, the cost is included in your ski pass.

• Advanced+

  Although predominantly known for its easy and intermediate slopes, there are 10km (six miles) of black pistes in the wider area, a quarter of these in the Aineck sector.
  
  The Top Ski regional pass covers more than 30 ski areas in Carinthia and the Eastern Tirol, opening up access to nearly 1,000km (625 miles) of piste on slopes up to 3100m high. Resorts you can visit include World cup race centres like Bad Kleinkirchheim and Turracher Hohe.

• Snowboarding at Katschberg+

  Snowboarders will enjoy the easy fast chairlift rides up the wide open slopes, great carving terrain. There's a fun park on the Aineck peak, with a half pipe created when snow cover is adequate, along with a pro-jump, slide and exciting boardercross course.

• Other Activities And Facilities at Katschberg+

  Most of the alternative activities in Katschberg are outdoor. There are 20km of cross country trails and a good deal of cleared winter hiking trails. There are toboggan runs, a floodlit ice rink that also offers curling, the chance to try snowshoeing or take a horse drawn sleigh ride.
  
  Scenic tours of the area by helicopter are also available. There's a public swimming pool and indoor tennis down in St. Michael in the valley below.

• Apres Ski And Dining Out+

  There are about a dozen bars and restaurants spread between Katsachberg and the neighbouring village of Rennweg. Schlössl is a leading venue with après-ski cocktails daily from 2pm. There's live music here on Wednesdays beginning at 9pm.
  
  Lärchenstadl has fondue evenings, Austrian evenings and Italian nights weekly. It bakes delicious pizzas in its wood-fired oven and has live music every Friday or Saturday. The Kärntner Einkehr also has live music for après-ski daily, and serves Italian cuisine and wine as well as cheese and schnapps specialities.
  
  The Erlebnisgasthof Alpina is a steak house, whilst the Wilderer Alm offers specialities from the local Lungau region. At the Pritzhütte you can take rides in a horse-drawn sleigh, and the Gamskogelhütte serves Carinthian delicacies and organises a regular sledding evening.

• Ski Holidays in Katschberg suitable for Families+

  Katschberg is a good choice for families looking for an intimate ski resort. There are many slopes suited to families and a special area for the Katschi´s Kids World ski kindergarten with special lifts, caring staff, cut-out figurines to ski through and around and a warming area.
  
  Children's ski school operates from age four and there is a non-ski nursery in the hotel Cristallo for children aged three and older.
