Igls is a long established resort sitting on a gentle sunny slope above the Tirolean capital, Innsbruck. Travel between the two, about five kilometres (two miles) apart, is easy by ski bus, meaning you can chose between staying in the village or experiencing city break style facilities at any time.

The local Patscherkofel ski mountain is one of the longest established in world skiing, with the first cable car built to it in 1929. The area has twice hosted downhill events at the Innsbruck Winter Olympics of 1964 and 1976.

The local ski area is very small by modern standards with only 14km (nine miles) of largely easy and intermediate runs. However the vertical is impressive at nearly 1,400m making for some wonderful long blue and red runs of up to five kilometres (three miles) from top to bottom.

The Innsbruck Olympia SkiWorld area pass covers nine ski areas, 80 mountain railways and lifts and 285 km of piste in total. A free ski bus service links Innsbruck city centre with the individual areas, which include the Stubai glacier for guaranteed snow.
  • Skiing for Beginners+

A wonderful resort in which to learn to ski, Igls offers an intimate and unintimidating ski area where you can practise on sunny slopes with spectacular views of the Inn Valley below. The Igls ski schools organize daily courses for beginners, and private lessons can be booked.

There is a nursery slope at village level, or easy slopes at the top of the mountain, accessed by the easy-to-use cable car, if snow cover is limited at resort level. Once you have mastered the basics there are beautiful long easy trails back down to Igls to enjoy.
  • Intermediate Skiing+

Although advanced intermediates may find it difficult to remain entertained for a full week on the Igls slopes alone, this is a good area for several days enjoying the long runs down through the trees, and all slopes can be tackled by intermediate level skiers.

It is also a good choice of venue to take further ski school lessons to improve your technique. Many skiers may take advantage of the regional ticket and visit the larger neighbouring ski area of Mutteralm, recently lift linked to Axamer Lizum or pop over to Tulfes in the other direction to ski on the Glungezer mountain.

Back in Igls, night skiing is offered with the Heiligwasser drag lift remaining open from 5-9pm nightly throughout the season and the nearby Restaurant "Olex" is open to 10pm.
  • Advanced+

Although there are no black graded trails at Igls, it is possible to ski on the five kilometeres (three mile) long Olympic downhill red run on the Patscherkofel, which was the site of a famous victory by legendary skier Franz Klammer in the 1976 Games.

There are two off piste ski routes, graded red, on the powder slopes at the top of the mountain, the only area above the tree line. The Skiroute Nord is the longer of the two at just over two kilometres (one-and-a-quarter miles) long. The area pass gives access to eight other ski areas nearby including the Stubai glacier.
  • Snowboarding at Igls+

Boarding is big in the region with Innsbruck a long time host of the famous annual Air and Style festival each December. Igls itself does not have a terrain park but the resort's cable car does open up over a thousand metres of potential powder snow fun, with the pistes cutting through forest to create plenty of natural terrain features along their edges.

Most of the other eight ski areas on the regional lift ticket do operate parks and pipes, so day trips could be the order of the day to Kuhtai and the Stubai glacier (both very high, meaning parks can be built early in the season and last longer) as well as two parks at the neighbouring Mutteralm / Axamer Lizum and one at Nordpark, accessed by a new funicular and cable car from Innsbruck city centre.
  • Other Activities And Facilities at Igls+

Igls has cross country ski tracks, an exciting toboggan run and the chance to take a taxi ride down the Olympic bobsled run. There is a natural ice skating rink with Alpine curling, and paragliding and ballooning are available in the area. There are also indoor tennis and squash courts.

The resort's cultural centre hosts folklore and cultural events throughout the winter. Most of the resort's hotels have indoor swimming pools and other facilities such as spas and wellness activities.
  • Apres Ski And Dining Out+

The après ski scene in Igls is largely quiet and limited to a dozen hotel bars and restaurants. There's always the option of enjoying city centre nightlife a few minutes away below in Innsbruck. That's not to say the quality isn't there in Igls with consistently high calibre establishments for both service and cuisine.

Popular venues for drinks include the Agidihof or wine bar in the Batzenhäusl. For more sophistication still, the five star Schlosshotel has a cocktail lounge. All restaurants are based in hotels and particularly good options are provided by the Sporthotel, the Hotel Batzenhäsl which offers regional specialities in local cuisine and the RÜmerhof.
  • Ski Holidays in Igls suitable for Families+

At the bottom station of the Patscherkofel lifts children have their own 'Kids Land' where they can learn to ski and have fun in a specially created environment that includes a toboggan ride.

During peak season Bobo's Adventure Outdoor Kindergarten operates, accepting children aged from four to 14 between 9am and 5pm daily. Igls also has one of the most generous lift ticket deals for families, with children aged ten and younger skiing free if accompanied by a paying parent.
