A small and friendly village, Filzmoos is a great place to learn to ski, or to increase your experience, in a beautiful and unintimidating environment. Although the local terrain is most suited to those in the first few weeks of their skiing careers, with a small ski area made up of gentle to moderate slopes, it is part of the larger Sportwelt Amade, linked by ski bus several times a week to larger ski areas in the neighbourhood, with tougher terrain.

  • Start from£
The local slopes comprise one of the smallest and lowest ski areas of all ski resorts in the brochures, but this is a good thing if you are looking for a friendly uncrowded ski resort, and there's almost 100% snow making coverage of the piste. Another point in the village's favour is the short easy transfer from Salzburg airport, a little over an hour away.

Beginners

A great choice for first timers, Filzmoos has nursery slopes right in the village for minimum hassle, and the fact that the resort has three small ski schools to choose from helps drive up tuition standards, thanks to the competition.

If there are any snow problems at village level an easy to use gondola will take you to gentle terrain at altitude. There are great slopeside cafes to relax in between lessons. Finally, we can offer a package deal that includes lift ticket, tuition and rentals which can be pre-booked, again to minimise hassle as well as saving money.

Intermediates

Filzmoos has rather limited terrain for advanced intermediates in terms of the length of ski piste available, the longest of which is one-and-a-half kilometres (one mile) long. However it is part of the vast Ski Amade pass system which links dozens of similar small ski areas in the region and has over 860km (about 540 miles) of piste available on one ticket. Having a rental car to reach it all is helpful, but a ski bus operates to Flachau and other resorts nearby three times a week (at an additional charge).

Advanced

The half kilometre long Papageno run is the only black run in Filzmoos, but the three local ski schools do all offer off-piste, back country ski tours over challenging terrain with local expert guides who are aware of the avalanche risks.

These range from one to four hour tours, for example the 'Magic Powder Rettenstein' tour takes three-and-a-half hours and goes first to the Rettensteinhütte then on to the Bergstation, Rettensteinlift, Reitalm and Hofalm before returning to Filzmoos. Of course it is also possible to take the ski bus to more challenging pistes on the Amade Pass, such as the World Cup descents at nearby Flachau.

Snowboarding

Filzmoos has managed to attract quite a lot of snowboarders despite having no terrain park or pipe, perhaps because the three ski schools here all offer good boarding tuition or because the natural terrain has a lot of fun, natural hits to be found.

There's also the option to tour neighbouring resorts on the Amade Pass, where there are four terrain parks. For skiers who fancy trying out snowboarding for the first time, a trial lesson is organised every Wednesday by the Filzmoos Ski School at 4.30pm at the Bögrain lift, in a package deal which includes rental of a snowboard. Book ahead at the Ski School office.

Other Activities and Facilities

Filzmoos has a very good public swimming pool complex. There's also a games room, museum, post office, several banks and cash machines and about a dozen shops.

Cross country skiing is a big attraction in the area with 40km of trails around the surrounding area. If you prefer to tackle these on foot there are 50km of cleared winter walking routes, and snow shoes available to rent.

You can also book one of the eight sleighs for hire in the village or even take a hot air balloon ride above it all. Excursions to Salzburg, about an hour away, are offered.

Après Ski and Dining Out

There are about 30 night spots, bars and restaurants in the resort and it is much livelier than the size of its ski area might suggest. Popular bars include Keen-i-di and the usually lively Happy Filzmoos.

Most of the restaurants are traditional Alpine establishments within the resort's hotels but there are Italian options for pizza and pasta. At the higher end of dining options, the Unterhof and Alpenkrone offer the highest standards.

Families

Filzmoos is a lovely place for a family ski holiday in beautiful surroundings and with an intimate, family-friendly ski area. A ski kindergarten run by the local ski school accepts children aged from two-and-a-half right up to 14.

Snowboarding lessons can begin from age six. The kindergarten operates from 9.45am to 3.30pm from Monday to Friday each week and is centrally located at the base of the slopes. Children do not pay for their lift pass until age seven so long as they are accompanied by a paying adult or are in ski school.
